Hello, first I want to thank you for great driver. I'm making Gentoo live cd, ovl= fs,=20 and linux live scripts. But I have this problem: Ovlfs works fine, I can start KDE from cd and work without problem, but=20 after fast filesystem access (copy or file search) are fs which use ovlfs=20 unmouted. I spent 4 days with kernel compiling and I thing it have somethin= g=20 to do with system optimalizations. Kernel which works fine on unoptimized=20 system sucks on optimized system.=20 So, did you have this problem before or is any way how debug ovlfs? Hello there, Arthur and whomever else! I've recently run across your project in the search for something that does exactly what it accomplishes. That's good news! Specifically what I'm looking for is software to allow me to mount a RO NFS filesystem as root, and have writes automatically redirected to a RW NFS space on another system. Reason being, that I develop/admin HPC clusters, and am interested in simplifying creation of methods & maintenance in daily life. What my group needs is support for the 2.6.x kernel, exclusively. I've noticed that there does not seem to be any current support level available for OVLFS. Are you interested in continuing the project, or will you be dropping it and leaving it to the community? Thanks alot. /eli PS-Not on the list, it seems the ovlfs-devel isn't even available for subscription. -- Eli Stair University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing 155 South 1452 East RM 405-17 SLC, UT 84112 Tel: 801-558-3099 |

Hi, Im very interested in the ovlfs module, as i'm developing a live-cd=20 metadistro, i want it to have the possibility to virtually mount in rw mode= =20 the compressed loopback filesystem, so one can make changes that only will = be=20 done on a ramdisk or usb-device. Is there any idea to port it to 2.6 kernels? Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi, I noticed on the forum that other people are having the same problem as I. In any kernel newer that 2.4.20, the make fails with an undefined reference to 'errno' in function getdents in file file_test_getents.c One of the replies on the forum made reference to the SLAX web site. I talked with the creator of SLAX and he had errors also, but ignored them. Can you please fix this ? Thanks, -- Paul Worcester |

When compiling ovlfs 2.0.1 on Rehat 9.0 with kernel 2.4.20-8 I get an error about conflicting definitions of struct list_t. One file is the include/kernel_lists.h file in the ovlfs distro and the other one is from /lib/modules/2.4.20-8/build/include/linux/list.h. The definitions are drastically different. Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks. |

In your RELEASE_NOTES, that anybody interested in your live image
using a root fs overlay should write to you. I am so I am.
We currently use a dual-boot system, one of which is a read-only
recovery partition. I believe that, by using your overlay FS, we can
eliminate this additional partition. That would help us to take
advantage of modern features of linux distros that did not exist when
our system was originally developed.
How did you do it? Why did you have to do it that way? What usage
characteristics of overlay-fs required that approach?
I got this error when I tried to execute "configure". Does this mean
that I cannot use the distro stock kernel? Or that I need to dig the
dot config out of the src rpm that was used to build it? I will wait
for you to interpret this for me before I assume anything
$ ./configure
warning: configuration file, /usr/src/linux/.config, not found
warning: Active Kernel appears to have been compiled with modversions
warning: Kernel source appears not to be configured with modversions
Many thanks.

Hi, at the moment im experimenting with your ovlfs under kernel 2.4.23 and I think i've found a bug. when mounting an overlay filesystem with the "storemaps" option it will not handle hardlinks correctly, see the following behavior: I changed dir into the ovl filsystem, where I do the following: # echo "first" > testfile2 # ln testfile2 testfile2.old # ls -la testf* -rw-r--r-- 2 root root 6 Jan 11 15:44 testfile2 -rw-r--r-- 2 root root 6 Jan 11 15:44 testfile2.old # rm testfile2 # ls -la testf* ls: testfile2.old: No such file or directory as you can see, when the original file is deleted, also the hard-linked file will be deleted from the ovlfs, but not completely, as ls will find the name of the link and complains. Normal behavior should be that only the original file will disappear. when using the "nostoremaps" option, it seems to work ok. regards Charly |

Estimado/a ovlfs-devel, Hello, I'm trying to compile ovlfs-2.0.1 on my Slackware 9.1 with kernel 2.4.24 but I get some error, and I don't have what to do (I've already searched in google). Hello, I am interested especially in the overlay feature. I want to hold old data on cheap medias like CD or DVD. But the should appear in the working directory for the projekt, which is on more expensive (backup) read-write media. If I understand your overlay filesystem in the right way, it will copy the file from the read-only media to the read-write media, when anybody tries to write on the file. Is this feature configurable? Could I define some files form which this will succeed, while for other files this will not succeed? With best regards Marten Karl |

Hi, first some information: ovlfs version 2.0.0 No modifications kernel 2.4.21 I have a problem with a mounted ovlfs and then doing a chroot. This is done in initrd, I mount /etc from a nfs-server and thrn mount a directory in /tmp with overlayfs in order to be able to write to /etc. This is all done in /tmp/sysmnt/etc, /tmp/sysmount/tmp/etc, then I try to chroot to /tmp/sysmnt. When I issue chroot the systems hang, and after a while it complaining that it doesn't have enougth memory. Is this something you have discovered previous? Any known fix? / Karl |
