This morning I had one of those ideas that can only be had in the shower.
You click on a link like this:
The anybookanywhere.org server checks for a cookie. If you don't have one,
you're asked to identify the library whose catalog you'd like to search --
by entering your ZIP code, or typing the name of the library, or
whatever. This is then stored in your cookie.
Your search is then translated (because ABAW knows what kind of catalog
that is), into the appropriate link:
And you're forwarded -- seamlessly, on repeat visits -- to your local
Web authors could create one link for each book on a page of book reviews
(personal plug: http://www.atlantic.net/~sylvar/bookblog/ ), and that link
would work locally for as many people as is technically possible.
Of course, vendors whose web catalogs don't accept arbitrary searches like
that would be left out in the cold. Poor dears! ;)
