Yes, we are using Debian and Samba at our library to serve up reference cd's.
While probably on a smaller scale than you would require (I think I only have
about 10 or 12 cd's on it), I used an old computer (500 mHz at best) and
added a second hard drive to hold the iso images. It was not very difficult
at all to set up, and it has been running without a hitch since I brought it
online several months ago. Below is the CD Server Howto I used to figure out
how to do it:
