I mostly lurk on oss4lib impressed by the growing open effort toward
library tools. This is an amazing community.
I'm sure most of you have discovered this already, but just in case
not, take a look at "http://www.librarything.com";. I believe this has
only been up for less than a month, yet it has already built a
catalog of 175,000 entries. While not open-source, it is aimed at
building an open flikr-like community around bibliographic entries.
What is especially interesting is that the developer has put out a
call for help given that the growth will probably outstrip his PHP/
MySQL knowledge pretty soon (see "http://www.librarything.com/blog/
Tools like LibraryThing (and Delicous Library "http://delicious-
monster.com/" for those lucky enough to be on Macs) offer a number of
fresh organization and interface ideas while using tried and true
techniques we've developed in the library community over the years. I
am very excited to see the work oss4lib is doing and also very
excited to realize there is a parallel interest in topics of our sort
outside libraries proper. I wonder how much these two communities
will discover and aid each other over the coming years? I bet that
has already begun.
