The MyLibrary manual is progressing. See: http://dewey.library.nd.edu/mylibrary/manual/mylibrary-manual.html Future versions of the manual should be in PDF as well as other manifestations of HTML, but I have to see why FOP is choking on me. A growing number of people are contributing to the manual, and they include: * Agnes Tatarka * Brenda Reeb * David Larsen * Harold Kirkwood * Isabella O'Neill * Keith Morgan * Leslie Johnston * Martin Courtois * Megan Johnson * Michael Yunkin * Nora Dimmock * Rob Fox * Terry Huttenlock * Tod Olson * Vishwam Annam I am trying to have the manual written as a general introduction to digital libraries using MyLibrary as an example implementation. That is why there is as large section pertaining to usability, but it presently contains a whole lot of Perl API docs. I also anticipate essays on information architecture (users, context, and content) and relational database design. I am looking for authors who are willing write about relational databases and indexing techniques. If you would like to become famous by writing such a thing, then don't hesitate to drop me a line. ;-) -- Eric "Off To Play Disc Golf" Morgan University Libraries of Notre Dame (574) 631-8604 |

This conference season encourage publishers to make their content "LOCKSS-able". LOCKSS is a potential solution to the problem of preserving and archiving electronic serial literature. Libraries that run a LOCKSS box can collect, own, and preserve for the long term a copy of the electronic serials they subscribe to, but only if the publishers give permission. For more information about LOCKSS see: http://www.lockss.org/ Many publishers have said they will give permission, but fewer have added the necessary permission pages to their web sites allowing LOCKSS computers access. Apparently publishers are not following through because the library community has not expressed an interest. While LOCKSS is not necessarily open source software, the underlying principles of LOCKSS -- the uninhibited access to data and information -- are the same as the principles of open source software. When you see your publisher friends this conference season, please encourage them to make their content LOCKSS-able. -- Eric Lease Morgan Head, Digital Access and Information Architecture Department University Libraries of Notre Dame (574) 631-8604 |
