Eric, et al, I forgot to mention Gnoppix http://www.gnoppix.org/ - An Ubuntu Linux based Run-from-CD distribution; for those who prefer Gnome based stuff. Sorry to SPAM the list like this... George Harmon |

Eric, I used Knoppix this weekend to copy (via SFTP) 8.2 Gigabytes of Docs, mp3 files, Endnote Libraries, Spreadsheets, etc from a screwed up Compaq Laptop running Windows XP to my Linux Desktop via a little 5-port hub at the house. Knoppix has ntfs-tools installed. There is also a cd called "The System Rescue CD" at http://www.sysresccd.org/systools.en.php . It runs partitioning tools, midnight commander, links - in GUI or command line mode, file system tools, and a lot more. I also used a password reset tool to reset passwords so that I could reboot and re-sys the Win XP system. I know that this all comes under the heading of Security/Data Recovery but, these tools might be immediately useful to Librarians. Whaddya think? I was able to resurrect my Windows-based machine, de-fragment the one of the disk partitions, re-partition the drive, install Debian from the Knoppix CD, fry my Windows OS while testing it, resurrect my Windows-based machine (again), and try my hand at making a Knoppix distribution.
