I can respond informally, as a longtime SiteSearch user and member of = the SiteSearch community. OCLC is no longer developing SiteSearch, but = there is a community of implementors who are attempting to shape themselves into = an open-source development project. One impediment was the license under = which OCLC originally released SiteSearch, which restricted commercial use of = the product and therefore was not a true open source license according to = the rules of OSF (not to criticize OCLC for this - they had valid reasons). We've recently heard that OCLC is ready to change the license, which is = very welcome news. This will enable us to move the project to SourceForge = and, we hope, start working more effectively as a community of developers = rather than just implementors. There are a lot of institutions still using SiteSearch in a big way and writing code to accomplish specific goals; = we just need to pull it all together. (To be accurate, one element of SiteSearch, the Pears database, is = under active development in the Office of Research at OCLC.) SiteSearch works with Z39.50 resources; you'd have to do some work to = get it to work with other types of searches. But its Z39.50 functionality is excellent, giving you full control of the search attributes etc. The learning curve can be steep, though.
