Hello, --- Ed Summers <eh...@po...> escribió: > Speaking of ISIS, I understand that ISIS is an > implementation of Z39.2 [1], > as is MARC [2]. That's not completely correct. ISIS is a database architecture build on a master file that resembles the Marc record. You can implement every format used for bibliographic databases who uses number as tags as Marc21, Unimarc, CCF and other formats. The most common problem in Marc implementation in ISIS is that you have to locate the leader in a data field because ISIS don't use a special location for the leader. But that is a very low price compared to all the features of ISIS, including support for subfields and repeated fields and a well thought and flexible indexing system (field, subfield, word and format indexing). It is very easy to build bibliographic catalogs with ISIS, which is used in many third world countries because it's mostly free and it runs even on old computers (as low as an 286). Since most applications for ISIS, as CDS/ISIS (DOS), Winisis (MS Windows), Javaisis and the Bireme Utilities (as Wwwisis and Wxis) are free but not open, two German programmers are working on an open library for ISIS: Openisis. With the Perl-Binding of Openisis I am working on a simple open OPAC too, that will be released in February 2003. You can find more information (in english) about ISIS on the Openisis website (www.openisis.org) Happy New Year!
