Hi All, FYI, I submitted code changes to prepare for integration of the various translations under way. For those who have a work area, please "svn up" it to refresh it. You'll note a languages/<language> directory. You'll note there are files in languages/english/, these are the files that need to be translated. Please keep the same names as the files in the languages english directory. We'll be adding a radio control to select the language. Based on which language is selected (english=default), it will include the files from the appropriate languages directory rather than english. The end result should be a site with the same look and feel, but the content changes based on the language selected. Questions, comments, and feedback are welcome as always. Andrew |

Hi Everyone, First, a reminder that osbootcamp7 runs this Tuesday, 5pm to 8pm at 2000 Minto Centre, Carleton University, Ottawa. I've decided to cross post this email to the wider osbootcamp discussion list to announce the osbootcamp-devel list and subversion code repository (in Sourceforge). The osbootcamp-devel mailing list is aimed at development of the osbootcamp web site and workshops. We completed the work to add the site into svn, create a bug tracker, and more in order to make it easier for others to participate and provide a place to do training and skills development. I am thrilled that 11 volunteers have already stepped forward to be a part of this. This is great, and I can't thank them enough for their time and efforts. Part of this is skills training... we now have a place to work hands on with the skills we're teaching in the osbootcamp sessions. This includes shell access for those interested in honing their skills. We're initiating a project to translate portions of the osbootcamp web site to better support international events. To share information, we have planned fall events in the UK, the US, and Germany. We also have interest from Australia, Spain, and South Africa. It is my hope that by proactively translating the content we might encourage osbootcamp events in non-English speaking countries too. This is not to mention showcase the great & diverse talent we have on our side! (thanks again to the team) Similar to the translations, I'm doing a lot of thinking about how we'll organize event information. My thoughts are around how we could come up with a meaningful common code to denote the osbootcamp events in a big wide world. Something like using the nearest international airport code and then incrementing it as additional events are held. It is my hope that reusing a well know code system should ensure all osbootcamp events can comfortably follow the same clear convention and know roughly where the other events are taking place. Thus, under this system, Ottawa events would be YOW1, YOW2, ... , YOWn. This would be shorter than meta data such as the city, state/province, country, etc. Events in Ottawa (such as Carleton, Ottawa U, Algonquin, or elsewhere) would all be YOW and simply incremented as new events are created. For example YOW8 would be the event at Carleton in August. YOW9 at Ottawa U in September. YOW10 at Carleton in September, and so on. Each event would be uniquely represented in our database with a date, time, location, host, speakers, and so on. If you have any ideas on this, I'd be happy to hear your suggestions. Hi Everyone, Translating the base/ more static aspects of the site such as the about page, sponsorship page, pages about holding a bootcamp, pages about getting involved with the site's development, contact would be a great accomplishment by end of August and leave us in good shape to support the international events this fall. Here's who I think signed up to lead the charge for each language. Thank you kindly for volunteering. I really appreciate your help. Hi Everyone, Whenever you make changes, please do the following: 1) Check spelling for any modified files aspell -c <file> NOTE: be careful you don't spell correct HTML or PHP code of course as it'll no doubt show up as incorrectly spelled. Use ignore and add appropriately to filter the noise from tags and php syntax. 2) Check the site for broken links http://validator.w3.org/checklink You can point it to your development copy of the site. When I ran it, I checked "Check linked documents recursively, recursion depth" to a depth of 5 3) Functionality test Check the site with Firefox and IE to make sure everything looks ok. Hi Guys, For those that have their sourceforge and server accounts, you can do the following to make a copy of the code to work on it. 1) Log into busxt03.carleton.ca with the account I provided you. 2) Check out a copy of the code to your public_html directory within your home directory svn co https://osbootcamp.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/osbootcamp ~/public_html 3) Change directory to your public_html directory and do a directory listing cd ~/public_html ls Please let me know when you get this far. I'll show you how to use vi to edit the code. Also, see the svn mini how-to for instructions on doing things with subversion. If you have any questions, please post them back to this mailing list so that others may benefit. It's ok if you have basic questions... this is why we're doing this. Hi Guys, On a Linux box, it's really easy to check the spelling of a web page. Take a look at this example: aspell -c home.php This opens an interface that shows you any words that aren't in aspell's dictionary. You have a choice to add them to the dictionary, ignore the word, replace the word with the proper spelling, and more. Give it a try sometime. Andrew |
