A controller that is supported by OpenOCD is also a plus. OpenOCD JTAG debuggers are significantly cheaper than brand name debuggers (~$50) and they usually offer everything that a developer needs.

The controller must be available in a leaded package like TSSOP or QFP.
If the controller is supported by FreeRTOS that would be a plus, because development on a RTOS is easier than developing every function from scratch.

According to that page https://community.freescale.com/docs/DOC-103183 the currently preferred controller (KV30) is supported by OpenOCD. :)
