Open Source Solar Inverter – Why?

There are a lot of solar inverters out there.
Why would anyone put his or her time into a product that you can already buy?

My motivation for starting this project is that a lot of companies that developed and manufactured solar inverters have gone bankrupt in the last years because of the tough market situation.

There is a lot of know-how out there regarding the design of solar inverters, that is no more put to use, because the companies that employed and trained the developers are no more.

The goal of this project is to collect this knowledge and make it available for anyone anywhere to build his or her own solar inverter knowing that it is a proven design that will just work.

The project will involve a lot of knowledge from different fields: software engineering, control simulation, electrical and electronic engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, sourcing of parts and so on.

I was there, I did this and I know what it takes to build a solar inverter.

If you want to contribute: join and learn! Let's do this.

The first steps will be to collect the requirements for what the first inverter should be able to do.
- Just convert DC to AC?
- Charge a battery?
- no communication interface or even equipped with a web interface?
- indoor or outdoor capable?
