Installation

Requirements

In order to use ORSimpleVideoConverter you must have installed a Java Runtime Environment 1.7 or later.

Run JAR installer by command line (Windows, Linux)

1. Open the shell command-line interface
2. Go to the folder where is the orsvc-xxx.jar installer. [cd c:\Path_to_jar_folder (windows) or cd /Path_to_jar_folder/ (linux)]
3. Run java -jar orsvc-xxx.jar (replace xxx by the file name that have you downloaded)

Run JAR installer

Windows

1. Double click over orsvc-xxx.jar
2. Follow the steps shown on installer

Ubuntu/Mint

1. Click on left mouse button
2. Choose "Open with Oracle Java 7 Runtime"
3. Follow the steps shown on installer

Run Linux orsvc deb package

1. Open the shell command-line interface
2. Go to the folder where is the orsvc_xxx.deb installer, by command-line (e.g. cd /Path_to_deb_folder/)
3. Run: sudo dpkg -i orsvc_xxx.deb (replace xxx by the file name that have you downloaded)

Run orsvc dmg package (Mac OS X)

1. Open the orsvc.dmg image
2. Drag the orsvc.app to a folder of your choice

Configurations

Configure FFmpeg

To work with ORSVC it is mandatory to use a FFmpeg executable, suitable for your
Operating System. It is advisable to install a static distribution of FFmpeg,
that can be found on-line in the following websites:

• Linux: http://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/
• Windows: http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/
• Mac OS X: http://evermeet.cx/ffmpeg/

After acquiring a static binary distribution of FFmpeg, you can import it to ORSVC, on: ”Settings-->FFmpeg”. Then, click on ”Load”, choose your executable and click on ”Validate and set”, as shown in the next figure:

The executable can be imported to an internal folder of the ORSVC by selecting ”Import executable...”, or if this option is not selected, will be assigned the path to the executable that you have chosen.

Configure FFmpeg encoders

You can choose some of the video and audio encoders that you want to use in the encoding of your video. For instance, if you have a FFmpeg distribution with different aac encoders (i.e. libfaac, libfdk aac, etc...), you can set which aac encoder you want to use in your video conversion. For that, go: ”Settings→Encoders” and you can choose the encoders that will be used. Nevertheless, it will be presented only the encoders that are supported by your FFmpeg executable. These parameters it only be applied for Xvid, H264 and VP8 or VP9 video encoders, or aac and ac3 audio encoders.

I want to use my own FFmpeg compiled version, it is possible?

Yes, you can use a FFmpeg executable compiled by you. However, you must enable some features in your compilation, and they are:

• --enable-libass
• --enable-libvpx
• --enable-libx264
• --enable-libtheora
• --enable-libvorbis
• --enable-libmp3lame

Can I use a FFmpeg version with other aac encoders?

Yes, you can compile the FFmpeg with any of the supported aac encoders as explained at: https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/AAC. Then, choose your default aac encoder.

Load video files

You can access to your video files using three different ways:

• Import all video files from a folder: in main menu select "Load files→Folder".
• Import all video files from a folder and its sub-folders: select "Load files→Folder and subfolders"
• Import one or more selected video files: select "Load files→Video(s)" or "add files".

During the importing process of the video files using the first two aforementioned methods, all the subtitle files that have the same name of video file, will be automatically detected and they will be also imported and associated to the imported video. Thus, if you want the automatic detection of the subtitle files, rename each one of the files to the same name of the corresponding movie. In the last one, you can select the video file(s) and any subtitle file that you want to import.

Note: only srt, ass, ssa and sub formats are automatically recognized.

Example: the movie name is mymoviename.mp4 and the subtitle name must be mymoviename.srt

Video conversion

The Main conversion profile is the profile that will be used in the conversion process, for all files that are selected in the conversion list (main menu). Nevertheless, is possible to change the conversion profile for each one of the video files present in that list. For example, if you want to convert a video file with different settings for audio or video encoding, just select the desirable video file on the list, and click on ”Conversion settings” in the main menu. Then, you can set another profile containing different conversion parameters or change the encoding parameters for that video file.

Main conversion profile

To configure your "Main conversion profile" go to: ”Settings→Conversion”, and will appear a panel to configure the video, audio and subtitle encoding parameters, as shown in the following figure:

Video

• Codec: you can select the video codec that will be used to convert your files

  • Xvid (avi)
  • Mpeg4 (avi)
  • H264 (mkv, mp4, flv, 3gp)
  • H265 (mkv, mp4) --> if supported by ffmpeg
  • VP8 or VP9 (webm)
  • Mpeg2 (mpeg)
  • Copy (no conversion)

• Video Aspect: you can define the aspect that you want using the same format as the following example --> 756x789

• Constant bitrate: you can change the bitrate using the following format --> 2500k

• File size: define an integer number that corresponds to the final file size in MB

• Variable bitrate: this parameter depends of the codec that is used in the conversion process.

• Custom FFmpeg commands: Beyond the available parameters for video encoding, it is possible to use any of the commands supported by FFmpeg. By activating the ”Custom FFmpeg command”, you can add parameters used in the command line of FFmpeg, as described in the FFmpeg website. However you must be carefull, because you have to add commands that are consistent with the chosen video or audio encoder, or commands that can be used with all encoders.
  As an example, you will use the H264 video encoder and you want to add additional parameters concerning to these encoder, for instance the following parameters ”keyint=123:min-keyint=20”, so you can add the following line (without quotes): ”-x264opts keyint=123:min-keyint=20 ” to the custom commands field.

If you want to use only your custom commands, activate ”Use only custom cmds”. By activating this feature you must be care, because the FFmpeg commands of ORSimpleVideoConverter will be inactivated (only the file mapping stays active), and you will have to define all the necessary FFmpeg commands to convert the video and audio.

For example: you want to convert a video to a mkv format using the libx264 encoder and the additional video encoder parameters ”keyint=123:min-keyint=20”, and use the libvo-aacenc audio encoder, so you have to add the following line (without quotes): ”-c:v libx264 -b:v 1000k -x264opts keyint=123:min-keyint=20 -c:a libvo aacenc -b:a 128k”. Morover, you need to choose the movie extension as mkv in the ”Movie extension” field.

Audio

• Codec: you can select the audio codec that will be used in the video conversion

• Preferred frequency(HZ): is the audio frequency that will be used in the audio conversion, if the source file has a lower frequency than the selected value, then, it will be considered automatically the closest lower value to the frequency of the source file.

• Preferred number of audio channels: is the number of audio channels of the converted file. It is possible to select the 5.1 audio encoding, however if the source file have a lower number of channels or the chosen audio codec do not supports 5.1 encoding, it will be automatically performed the downmixing to stereo.

• Constant bitrate: you can change the bitrate using the following format --> 130k

• Variable bitrate: is the average audio bitrate that will be used by the audio codec.

• Custom FFmpeg commands: similar to the previous description of the ffmpeg video custom commands.

• Use AC3 passthrough: if this feature is selected and the audio of the source file is an AC3 audio file, then, it will be performed the copy of the original AC3 audio file to the converted video file.

Subtitles

In the subtitles panel you can choose:

• HardSubtitles: the subtitles will be encoded directly on the video file.

• SoftSubtitles: the subtitles will be incorporated into the video file like independent captions.

Video conversion profiles

The default installation of ORSimpleVideoConverter, includes some predefined encoding profiles. However, you can create new profiles, save them and use it later. For that, change the settings in the ”Main conversion profile configurations” panel, as you like, and save these configurations as a profile. Also, it is possible to export and import them. You can access to the available profiles and its settings by clicking in the button ”Load profile”.

Configure look

ORSimpleVideoConverter supports different skins, and you can change them on: ”Settings→Look”. Also, it is possible to enable or disable tips in the graphical interface, which are used to show a brief description of the feature. Moreover, you can choose the language presented in the menus, but the ORSimpleVideoConverter must restarted to activate the chosen language.

ORSimpleVideoConverter does not present my native language, what can I do to have my native language?

At the moment, ORSimpleVideoConverter only supports English and Portuguese language in the default installation, however you can build your own language file and put it in the right place. For that, open the installation directory of ORSimpleVideoConverter, open the ”languages” folder and copy/paste one of the files (for example the lang_en_US.properties). Then, translate the content of the file to your own native language (Note: translate only the text after the equal signal), and rename the file name according the ISO-639 language codes and the ISO-3166 country codes.

Example: You are a Spanish native speaker and do you want the ORSimpleVideoConverter in Spanish, follow the aforementioned instruction to copy and paste the lang_eng_US.properties file, translate to Spanish and change the file name to lang_es_ES.properties. The next time that you start the ORSimpleVideoConverter you are able to select the Spanish language in the language field on the look configuration panel.
