Just create the file on the server side and the ORBit libs will read it automatically on server startup. You don't have to pass this parameter explicitly !! Hi, I also could not connect to the site. But a few days back i have copied the same file. Here is that file. <<ORBit FAQ.htm>> I am unable to give the parameters to CORBA_ORB_init. Can anyone please tell me that? I just noticed that, but it does affect all the project homepages on Sourceforge. orbitcpp.sourceforge.net doesn't work as well. The page has much more information than the original RedHat site and the ORBit-FAQ has an answer to your question... In the meantime you can try to insert the line -ORBIIOPIPv4=1 into the file /etc/orbitrc . The network connection should work afterwards. For an explanation of this you should wait until SourceForge comes up again (hopefully soon !!!!), because I don't want to explain the same thing over and over again.... ;-) Michael ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Walter" <dw...@sy...> To: <orb...@li...> Sent: Mittwoch, 20. Hi Michael, Thanks a lot. I have changed the 0 to 1 in the client side file /etc/orbitrc.But there is no file of that name on server side. Can i just create it same as client? How to give the parameters in the CORBA_ORB_init function.Particularly please tell me how to give the ORBIIOPIPv4=1 . Thanks in advance. Hi All, I am new to to this ORBit software.I have downloaded the version ORBit-0.5.3 which has mapping for C.I have tried a program of echo client/server from the documentation. It worked perfectly fine when both client/server were on the same machine. Then i run client & server on different machines. I have removed the functionality of getting the object reference from a file.I use the xterm functionality of copying the IOR value as an argument to the client. After giving that argument the client binds and waits for user input after giving some chars & pressing enter it gives an exception 2 . Here's a few changes to get the latest from cvs.orbitcpp.sourceforge.net to compile with gcc-2.96. The problem was that you had forward declaration for some of your scoped classes within a protected block, gcc-2.96 uses the permission of the forward declaration, unlike previous gcc's. So the basic difference between _ptr and _var is that _var handles the refcounting? I've been using _ptr as _var causes a load of warning messages from gcc-2.96. Also, another question. I've been playing more with orbitcpp and am having a bit of a problem. I tried using oaf with orbitcpp, but liboaf does it's own orb initializion, through oaf_init(), which internally calls CORBA_ORB_init. The problem with this is that CORBA::ORB_init sets ORB_instance, which can't be set outside orbitcpp_orb.cc. This later becomes a problem when you try to call obj->_this(). Also, wouldn't having ORB_instance potentially create threading havoc if someone wanted to have more than one active orb? While at the moment I can't imagine why someone would want to do this, you never know what strange things programmers do. -- TTFN MikeB |

Nothing fancy - it's just a difference in the specs. C object refs are typedef'd void ptrs anyway, so you can use them interchangably without the compiler complaining. C++ object refs are statically typechecked by the compiler, and so you need a safe way to do the casts. > Also, the implementation of _narrow() appears to be calling _duplicate(), > is it truly allocating a new object and copying as the name suggests, or > just doing some refcounting? > The duplicate() semantically copies the object *reference*, not the object itself (and CORBA::Object::release() releases the object ref, but doesn't delete the object). There seems to be a problem when an idl includes another while in inhibit mode. The inhibit mode is necessary for idls that reference symbols defined in other idls, but don't want to implement them. Attached are two files that reproduce the error. Attempting to compile worm.idl with 'orbit-idl -l c++ worm.idl' yields: apple.idl:4: unknown identifier ::Fruit::Apple Dave -- Never agree to plastic surgery if the doctor's office is full of portraits by Picasso. |

I was noticing in some of your test code that after calling orb->string_to_object() you call obj->_narrow(). If my understanding is correct, this is essentially a cast mechanism. My first question is why is this done in orbitcpp but not in ORBit, is it simply because C++ handles casting differently or is there more to it? Also, the implementation of _narrow() appears to be calling _duplicate(), is it truly allocating a new object and copying as the name suggests, or just doing some refcounting? Also, does one need to call CORBA::release() separately for both the reference returned by string_to_object() as well as the reference returned by _narrow()? -- TTFN MikeB |

If it would not be too difficult, it would be nice to be able to specify the generated file name extensions. Currently it uses .cc and .hh, but unfortunately there is no one standard, and the project I am working on and hoping to use orbitcpp with uses .cpp and .h as their extensions of choice. Just an idea... -- TTFN MikeB |
