You'll need autoconf 2.13+ and automake 2.5+ when built from a Git repository.
Don't forget to autogen.sh first.
We still currently support gcc 2.91.66. Please bear this in mind.
Any shell scripts should aim to be as compatible as possible with different
shells and "bashisms" etc. should not be used. Busybox is often used instead
of bash on embedded devices for example.
Use of Git
The oprofile project uses the Git version control system. Since Git may be
new to some contributors, this section will provide a "quick start" for Git.
Good online documentation for Git can be found here:
Install Git if needed, and configure your user name, and email address:
git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email "email@example.com"
Get a local copy of the oprofile repository:
git clone git://oprofile.git.sourceforge.net/gitroot/oprofile/oprofile
Update your local repo to the latest commits, whenever needed:
Edit files to make your change. You can review your changed files with:
Add the files that you changed to Git's index:
git add file1 file2
git add dir1/file3 ...
Note that you must add any file that has changed, regardless of whether
it was added before. This process is called "staging" your changes.
Verify that the staged changes look correct to you:
git diff --cached
Commit the change (with -s option to add the "signed-off-by" field):
git commit -s
Provide a detailed commit message: a one-line summary, a blank line, and
as much detail describing the change as you think is necessary.
Review your committed change, if desired:
When you have finished these steps, you have a local commit in your local
repository. The next section describes how to submit your patch.
This section has described making changes on your local master branch. It is
much better practice to create a new branch for your changes, and leave the
master branch unmodified. This is quite easy in git, and highly recommended.
The documentation referenced above explains how to do this.
Patches should be in diff -u format and must apply cleanly using "patch -p1"
in the top-level source directory. Patches should not include changes to
Git has tools to help with the creation and submission of patches in this
You can create a patch-file from the most recent commit using:
git format-patch -n HEAD^..
This will create local patch file with a name derived from your commit
message similar to this:
You can read this file into your email client and send it to the list. Or you
can have git send it for you:

It will prompt you for addresses, or you can give those as command-line
options. Depending on how email is configured at your location, you may need
to specify an SMTP server using the options:
Patches should be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org
There are many useful options. See the Git documentation.
You can apply these patches manually using the "patch" command in the usual
way, or you can use "git apply" or "git am". See the git documentation.
To get patches from the mailing list into Git, you first need to get the data
out of your email client and into a file. Some mail clients corrupt patches by
deleting leading spaces or adding carriage returns to line-endings. Sometimes
copy and paste into an editor works better than direct file save.
You can test if a patch you saved (called patch-file) applies by doing:
git apply --check patch-file
You can apply it to your working directory using:
git apply patch-file
And you can apply it directly staged to the index ready for commit with:
git apply --index patch-file
The use of the ChangeLog file has been deprecated. You should not modify it.
Your commit message should include all information that previously would have
been added to ChangeLog.
When you submit a patch, we ask that you include a "Signed-off-by"
line; for example:
Signed-off-by: Random J Developer <email@example.com>
This can be inserted by Git when you commit your patch your local repository
if you add the "-s" option to "git commit".
(If you forget to add it to your commit, you can alternatively add the "-s"
option to "git format-patch", if you use that command to generate your patch
Including this line with your patch implies that you have read and comply with
the "Developer's Certificate of Origin 1.1" (DCO). This is the same process
the kernel community uses to try to ensure the originality of patches. The
DCO can be found in <kernel-source>/Documentation/SubmittingPatches, item 12,
"Sign your work". This file can be found here:

If you make a change visible to the user in some way, you should check the
website for any needed changes. Patches to oprofile-www Git repo are preferred
but a notification of what needs changing is good enough. Any changes that
affect the docs (man-pages or oprofile.xml) must include documentation updates
as appropriate. Also see below.
You may after a while be given direct commit rights. You should be subscribed
to both the main list and the commits mailing list if you do. Your git commit
message must have the detailed description of what your change does. Any
non-trivial change needs approval from either John, Phil or Maynard, unless
stated otherwise. The Git repo will freeze occasionally for release, in which
case no commits are allowed at all without agreement of John, Phil, or
Maynard. If you make a change that affects the user (feature improvement, new
feature, bug fix, UI change), see the next section.
The oprofile website
The oprofile website source is stored in the oprofile-www Git repository,
excepting the doc/ and srcdoc/ directories, which are are generated from the
oprofile source code.. The visible website (http://oprofile.sf.net/) must
always describe the last *released* version of OProfile, but the Git
repository should be up to date with the latest code. This means that if you
make a user-visible change as described in the last section, you should update
the files in oprofile-www and commit.
You can do "git pull" in /home/project-web/oprofile/htdocs/git on sourceforge
to get http://oprofile.sf.net/git/, from where you can verify that your
changes work. (Aside from verifying via your browser, you can also validate
your HTML using http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/.)
Any user-visible change should have a short description in the file
release-notes/release-<nextversion> in the oprofile-www Git repository.
Do not document bug fixes that were not in the last released version.
