This link, http://www.liferay.com/community/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Virtual+Hosting+%28ASP%29 shows how to do virtual hosting in Liferay. Can OX portlets work in this environment? In other words, can it 'drop in' to this environment? Note that I think this setup is running a SINGLE database, so how would OX behave in this case?

It doesn't say anything about Liferay, is this the way to make it work?
OpenXava application should work fine with Virtual Hosting. The database of the OpenXava applications are the enterprise databases and are not related with the Virtual Hoting. Moreover, you can create multitentant applications with OpenXava.
