Our company currently uses MS Project at the
'individual contributor level'. For our particular
group, we've done extensive work with VBA to customize
Project to suit our needs and tastes for project
management. For example, we added setups and macros to
do 3 point estimates for work sizing. We also have our
own metrics used to measure project progress. Project
didn't have an equivalent, so again, we wrote some VBA
code.
Not every orgainization does project management the
same way and you'll never be able to provide all the
features that every company wants. The only way is to
cover all the popular requirements and have a means of
making applications feature set extensible.
Python seems to be a popular choice for scripting and
feature extension, so that seems a good choice. Other
languages might be equally as good as long as they are
commonly known.
Let me know if you have questions. There are several
things I see lacking in Project, so I'd love to see a
viable alternative.
