The PHB's prefer to think of projects as a nice, linear
expenditure of budget after which a product magically
appears. This leads them to find Gantt format charts
to be the most appealing, since it fits their
two-dimensional thinking process.
Please note the extraordinary potential value of Pert
networks, and a visual editor a la Pert Chart Expert
when added to MS-Project.
By creating a Pert waterfall with the appropriate
subproject open and close milestones, dependencies
plainly visible, and a means to create parallel bands
of Pert boxes for each subproject (or each resource,
etc.), a project manager can plainly display on a
wall-sized bedsheet plot the who, what, when and where
that people depending on tangible intermediate results
from a large project may be counting on.
Company policy where I work prohibits my on-the-record
identification. No, it's not a software house.
