The fact that players have had--and continue to have--in general, various Issues has nothing to do with plug-ins. A reasonably full-featured VRML/X3D player is a very complex piece of software that has dependencies on several other software layers (e.g., JavaScript, Java, audio and movie playback, network transport, etc.).
