OpenVRML doesn't directly depend on either of those things. It is conceivable that they are indirect dependencies; but the particulars of that are going to be distribution specific. You'll need to do a bit more investigating to see exactly why these are being pulled in. And, yes, OpenVRML is under pretty active development.
