Hello, I am totally frustrated over this problem. I have read a dozen posts about it with no luck. For starters: 1) I have my Tap adapter enabled. I tried disabling and re-enabling. No luck. 2) My tap Adapter *does* show up on Network Connections, however, ipconfig *does not* show any tap adapters at all. OpenVpn --show-net *does not* show any Tap devices either. 2.1) Device manager shows it as "TAP-Win32 Adapter V8", it is *not* hidden and says it is working correctly. Characteristics is 0x81 in registry. 2.2) I have two additional Tap Adapters that got installed with openVpn: "TAP-Win32 Adapter V8 - CommStudio Virtual Adapter By TamoSoft" and "TAP-Win32 Adapter V8 - Minipuerto del administrador de paquetes". These last two however, show up as hidden. 3) Of course I did try uninstalling and reinstalling at least 5 times the whole OpenVPN package, including the tap adapter, making sure every trace o= f it gets completely deleted from the registry before reinstalling. 3.1) I am using version 2.0.2 downloaded 2 weeks ago from http://openvpn.net/download.html 4) Firewall is of course OFF. No other personal firewalls are installed. 5) I have no antivirus Software installed at all, so no other firewalls could be messing with it. 6) I am on a Dial Up connection to the internet. Setup: Windows XP professional SP2. Spanish When I try to connect to my bridged VPN server, I get the following error: Sun Oct 30 22:26:01 2005 TAP-WIN32 device [my-tap] opened:\\.\Global\{60727E9C-93CA-4091-AB85-71F059F641BA}.tap Sun Oct 30 22:26:01 2005 TAP-Win32 Driver Version 8.1 Sun Oct 30 22:26:01 2005 TAP-Win32 MTU=3D1500 Sun Oct 30 22:26:01 2005 Notified TAP-Win32 driver to set a DHCP IP/netmask of 1 0.0.133.71/255.255.255.0 <http://0.0.133.71/255.255.255.0> on interface {60727E9C-93CA-4091-AB85-71F059F641BA} [DHCP-serv: 10.0.133.0<http://10.0.133.0>, lease-time: 31536000] Sun Oct 30 22:26:01 2005 NOTE: could not get adapter index for \DEVICE\TCPIP_{60 727E9C-93CA-4091-AB85-71F059F641BA}, status=3D55 : El recurso de red o el dispositivo especificados ya no se encuentran disponibles. I know my configuration file is correct, because I have succesfully installed an openvpn client under another windows XP SP2 computer (with different sets of certificates of course, it is not a client clash) with th= e very same config file (albeit the certs). The only difference between computers is the OS language. The problem machine is Spanish, the client with no problem is in english. One other difference is one machine is on a dialup link, the other one is on cable. Help Please! |

Hmm, I can see you have been reading up on this problem before posting as you seem to have tried everything I would have normally suggested already ;-) One thing though, have you tried running WinSockFix? (Google for it) Your problem description doesn't really match others that winsockfix have taken care of but it might be worth giving a shot anyway. -- _____________________________________________________________ Mathias Sundman (^) ASCII Ribbon Campaign OpenVPN GUI for Windows X NO HTML/RTF in e-mail http://openvpn.se/ / \ NO Word docs in e-mail |

By the way, I updated to using openvpn 2.0.4. Same error. Could it be the OS's language distribution do you think? I am all ears if you want to use me as an experiment to try and find this bug. I can install debug versions and produce logs that you can analize and digest if you want. Just let me know what you need from me. Should I move this problem to the development list? Don't think so, no. > I am all ears if you want to use me as an experiment to try and find > this bug. I can install debug versions and produce logs that you can > analize and digest if you want. Just let me know what you need from me. Well, that's great if I only had some more tips to give, but I houestly feel a little lost in this case. I havn't even looked at the TAP-Win32 driver source and even if I had, I don't think that's where the problem is. It seems more to me like a problem with the installation of the TAP driver, and as James has stated in several posts, the installation of a driver is not done by the driver itself, it is done by windows so if the installation goes wrong there is not much we can do about it. So, I'm sorry to say but I don't have many more tips to give, except for the tip you never want to hear -- A reinstall of Windows would probably sovle it! Hopefully someone else have some good ideas... > Should I move this problem to the development list? No, I still think it is a user problem. -- _____________________________________________________________ Mathias Sundman (^) ASCII Ribbon Campaign OpenVPN GUI for Windows X NO HTML/RTF in e-mail http://openvpn.se/ / \ NO Word docs in e-mail |

There are a list of steps documented as comments in the OemWin2k.inf that application developers must follow in order for their own TAP-Win32 adapter instances to not clash with TAP-Win32 adapters used by other applications. If these steps are not followed by a given application, then there could be interference with OpenVPN. James |

I forgot to come back here after I solved it, and now that I came back as a coincidence, I am writing this email for completeness sake. I went to my Tap Adapter->Properties, and disabled all the items I didnt need. I was left with client for M$ networks and TCP/IP. It worked like a charm. After several trial and error testing minimal changes I figured out that it was the "CommStudio Virtual Adapter By TamoSoft" what was causing the problem... ;) Thanks a lot everybody for their help.
