This is purely cosmetic. But I have noticed that the icons seem to date back to the Windows XP era and do not seem to support full transparency. I have attached some of the Icons that I modified for my own personal use (Inserted using Resource Hacker) that you may be interested in.
Modified Icons
Hi, I totally agree that the icons are majorly outdated.
had a free hour today and drew what I think would fit to be the new tray icon. It's minimalistic and kind of win8-like. Attaching the source XCF with layers.
Still have to think of a desktop icon, and especially it's resolution. Will post it here once it's ready.
Regards!
I like the idea of the lock in front of a screen, will check them out.
For the desktop icon I'll just use the openvpn logo, it's not protected and since this is the official GUI it's kind of a good fit.

Thanks for the feedback!
I finally got hold of a windows machine to test, created ICO files and inserted them manually using Resource hacker. Made some modifications to make the icon fit nicer into win8. Attaching the updated version.
I've modified the icons a bit. Check out the result:

Still a little unhappy with the program icon. I think it should have something GUI specific in it. Can you come up with something decent?
Hi Heiko,
Played around with the new build, looks nice!
We need to get some ideas for the main program icon to start with.
Usually a VPN client icon is either something with a lock, or with a shield.
The options I can think of are:
In my opinion the icon should be self-explainatory to users. What image will express the "Connect to protected network" message better?

I've tried the "OpenVPN logo with computer in front" option, but the 3D Vista+ Computer icon looked silly in front of the 2D OpenVPN icon. Maybe if it's arranged like the Windows Network icon with a little 3D effect on the OpenVPN logo itself and properly anti-aliased.
I'm too bad with images to do this myself, though. So, your help is appreciated here. =)
This icon is free for non-commercial use, maybe you want to use it.
This should fit into win7 nicely, however win8 completely changed the styling - now icons are monochrome and primitive.
Also, I'd personally prefer to see icons with no usage limitations at all. This can probably be done only if the icon is drawn from scratch, without using previous work. The stuff I sent previously is CC0 licensed, so anyone can do anything with these icons.
I'll try to create some icon proposals this week.
Excellent, thanks.
