Mplayer is able OK, but V0+1 and A0+1 ARE overlay tracks. If you only want to concatenate two files, place them both on VA+AA, the first file followed by the second file. The other two tracks, VB+AB are employed only if you want to join two files using a transition (which is then placed on VFx/AFx). The remaining tracks (V0,V1,... and A0,A1,...) are so-called overlay tracks. They were intended to insert things such as logos over another video.
