#48 When Password protection is enabled , server lags

I have found that password protection on a server running under Linux,
has serious lag. I have experienced pings going into the 20K range.
This ping build up is progressive and usually manifests itself,
1/2 way thru the game and is more apparent with more users.
Upon removal of the game password, pings go back to normal.
The severity of this problem seems directly proportional to the number of players.
