Thanks again for your advice. I have managed to get this
working.
The problems were as follows:-
The $CONFIG[WWW_SERVER'] entry was incorrect.
I had not correctly published the directory in apache.
I also had not compiled PHP with MySQL support.
Once I went through the above it began to function. Very very nice piece
of software, well done to you!

Can you check the web server logs? What version of php are you using?

No the www is the one that is supposed to be published (visible from the
web server), but for now you need to fix the WWW_ROOT. it should point
to the www directory which means:
$CONFIG['WWW_ROOT']='/openupload/www';
The remaining seems to be ok.
