Thanks for the reply :) She has a Blackberry Playbook, I have no idea if this counts as a newer model or not, what I personally know about Blackberry's could be written on a postage stamp. She's owned it for over a year, but it could be 2 years. I tried the instructions at http://www.netdirect.ca/software/packages/barry/installdebian.php already, substituting ubuntu13.10 for "squeeze", are you saying instead put "ubuntu12.04"?
