By synchronization of "files" you don't mean common PIM data like contacts, 
events and notes - right? OpenSync is currently a bit lacking when it comes 
to synchronization data/files which are big in size since the entire data got 
read into memory and multiply. So if you would sync in theory a fail with 4Gb 
you'll need 8Gb RAM. But this problem should be addressed very soon...

Could you give me more details what you're planning to sync?
