the program relies on the windows media player to properly play video/audio. however, WMP11 doesn't come with many common codecs (such as divx). as a result, many .avi files will not play properly in OpenSubtitle-Editor out of the box.
to remedy this, in the installation sequence (the .msi), i would really like to see an optional install of a codec-pack containing common codecs (but no players, i hate installing a million players :P). something similar to the k-lite-basic codec pack (perhaps you could even use that pack? i don't know if it's free to re-distribute). obviously, there should be a short textual explanation for the reasons to install this codec pack and also an easy way to uninstall it separately from the ose.
also, in case the ose encounters a codecless video, it would be a great help to users if the error msg contained some links to places where these codecs might be found (for example: http://www.wmplugins.com/ and http://www.fourcc.org/\). i know the program can detect this state of missing codec (or at least a general WMP error state), because in v 0.1.1.1 i get an unhandled exception when i try to play a video with no valid codec.
I plan on adding the most commonly used codecs as optional and by default unselected installation options to download-and-install in the Installer package.
It's not a priority currently, as the program's installer includes such a notice, and I plan to have the same notice be viewed on the program's first load.
Latest SVN Update displays a notice on first run regarding codecs.
I suppose we could talk to the guys at CCCP and create a script based on their installer that installs the relevant filters
If anyone's willing to take this matter in their hands, tell me and I'll assign this to them. Else, this has low priority, but it will get on the installer sooner or later.
