I have been considering doing something like this in Perl.    I already 
built a Perl utility with a GUI front end that configures an SCL script 
I wrote for a client, and I've been considering expanding it to do 
monitoring and results analysis as well.  I'm very interested in seeing 
what you've done.

For a permanent replacement of the Commander, it may be more feasible to 
stick with C++ and just switch to the gcc compiler (I'm sure this has 
been discussed here at length before I joined the list).  But for 
interim solutions that just solve some interesting subset of the 
problem, I thinking a scripting language is the way to go.
