      Hi,
         I know this is probably a bit late for you but hopefully it will help someone else.  openssl 0.9.8.600 is not compatible with AIX 5.2.  You need to download and install openssl 0.9.8.601 which is available from the IBM website (https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/pick.do?source=aixbp).  However if you're looking on the AIX linux toolbox it doesn't send you to this site for 5.2 but to the older RPM based downloads.
