Update: Have a linux vserver (from server4you.de) and a vmware (Fusion 2.0) based server, both running CentOS 5.2. On the vserver the image core dumps at startup as shown in my previous email, while it runs just fine under vmware. 

So my conclusion right now is to avoid linux based virtual servers for now. It was anyway just for testing purposes. Won't make sense for deployment anyway.
