Has any one used openSIPS to load balance actual calls coming(say like a call centeR) and NOT voicemail, conferencing,etc(which is the only thing the documentation shows). Isnt this what this kind of thing was MEANT for???

If you just want to balance incoming calls to asterisk box you just need to implement load balancer module.
