Hello, Is there an existing effort to map "Marine Protected Areas" in OpenSeaMap? Or are there any individual examples of such areas already in the map? I'm interested both for contributing data to the map, and also to see any existing cartographic renderings... Tanya http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_protected_area |

Ok, I am a little closer to figuring out what is wrong with your tile server. 'http://map.openseamap.org/' grabs the basemap tiles from ' http://osm1.wtnet.de/'. This tile server is serving up obsolete tiles! It is not the 'real' OSM tile server! Can we have a tile update please? What use is updating a map if the tiles are all out of date? It sure was an exageration. Indeed the best way would be to include he detailed stuff near the coastlines and waterways. I'm not sure you would save a lot, because e.g in Germany the waterways are quite close together. Could you render the outlines of settlements (landuse=residential) instead of all the residential roads. I know they don't exist for all of the cities, towns or villages, but you should save a lot of data. IMHO tertiary highways and up should be in the map since they are usually rendered in normal nautical charts also. I'd like to elaborate a bit more on the issue of areas to be downloaded. To conserve your server bandwidth you could make smaller sections. Someone who goes sailing in the Adriatic Sea might never have use for the mapdata in the Canary Islands, yet, as it is now, he has to download both. Why not group stuff more like the sea areas are named- Mediterranean East and West, Europe Atlantic Coast, North Sea, Baltic, South Chinese Sea, East and West Indian Ocean- you get the picture... One can always mix and match in mapsource. Right now the maps are divided up more like roadmaps, not by sea area. BTW, is there any documentation on the mapmaking process, like special OSeaM mkgmap stylefiles you guys are using, things you do to the OSM- file (like ripping out unwanted stuff etc.)? Is there something like a wikipage in case you want to roll your own maps? Thank you very much in advance, Christian |

Hi Christian, Currently only marine related POIs are included in the chart so there shouldn't be things like ice cream parlours. In regards to roads, I suppose the best solution would be to only include roads, buildings, and useful POIs that are within 5km or so of the coast. However, I don't know a way of filtering the OSM data to remove data not near the coast or a waterway. Hi everyone, I currently cruise in the South Pacific on SY Thor and I use the Garmin Openseamap charts you guys provide so generously. Of course I don't use them as my sole navigational charts, but since the coastline of OSM data is ofteh better than what the mapping professionals can come up with, it is a valuable piece to the puzzle called navigation. I am an Openstreetmap contributor since 2008 and because I started sailing a couple of years back I mapped for OSeaM as well. Here are some things I found about the OSeaM Garmin maps: As I said, the coastline is pretty accurate. Depth data is missing. I know you are working on it, but could you at least add the GEBCO contours to your Garmin charts? I know that the GEBCO stuff isn't very good above 200 m, but here in the South Pacific a lot of the waters in between the islands is over 1000 meters deep, so we would gain a lot of usefull information by including the GEBCO data. Inside the lagoons one has to rely on eyeball navigation most of the time anyways. The Pacific Ocean is the biggest Ocean in the World, and most of it is not available as a download in OSeaM. I think most is true for the other big oceans too. We are heading for Micronesia soon, and there is no Garmin map as of now. IMHO the files are too big. Do we really need all the residential roads of every landlocked country or every ice cream parlour in our OSeaM Garmin maps? The way the roads are rendered in my device (Etrex Legend Hcx)- all the names are abbreviated- the data is more or less useless anyways. Please don't take my critisism the wrong way, it is meant truly with the best intentions- towards the advancement of OSeaM. I'll try to find if something similar exists in respect to any other tags that could be applied to bays/capes as well. Bernhard |

Hi!
Bays and capes are tagged with
natural={cape|bay}
+name=*
Both are printed on official sea charts but dependent on their size and/or
importance in different font sizes/weights.
Any suggestions how we could get this into OSM?

Hi! I updated the set of sea charts of Croatia. The are rendered with Smrender. http://www.abenteuerland.at/download/smrender/charts/croatia/yellow_map/ The charts are based on OSM/OSeaM data of 18th of July and include SRTM data (contour lines). They are rendered in traditional yellow map style and also in the style of Imray Tetra charts (style not complete yet). Best regards, Bernhard PS: Smrender is found at http://www.abenteuerland.at/smrender/ |

OK Helge, Right now I opened the OpenSeaMap App. Click the left arrow and get a menu from which I choose "OpenSeaMap" and get to the start site. Click Fullscreen Chart, click the Tools/Download Chart. The Pop Up ask me to select a map. I select SkagerakKategat10. Then I have to choose Format (png, cal, kap, WCl, kmz and jpr) Tried them all, but now I click on "kap" and can go on and press the download button. I do so and get a message "Ah bummer, iOS doesn't allow direct downlodas". Then I click on direct link and get a source code "Created by makeBiGmap Rev. 1.06 - Use at your own risk" etc. This code is of no help and still I got no map for the OpenSeaMap App. So, Helge if you think it is possible we are quite a lot interested. We do not mind to download a paid for App specifically designed for iPad and downloading charts into the App. Best regards Lars |

Hey guys, I just read you search for a way to use OpenSeaMap on iPad. Basically there are three ways I know, one of them is supported well, the others not so well. 1) Use the OpenSeaMap App for iPad 2) Use another App which can download & display maptiles from tileservers 3) Use the website openseamap.org Alternative 1 is recommended, the OpenSeaMap app downloads only those tiles needed and caches them on the device. This serves the purpose to minimize load on our map-tile-servers and at the same time keep your maptiles current and uptodate. Caching also minimizes the amount of date you need to download on the device and speeds up accessing the map during normal use. Alternative 2 can be realized using different apps specialized on OFFLINE use and will need to download a LOT OF DATA to your device, even if you choose a small area you are interested in there are about 13 zoom-levels of this area you need to download. It will create a huge load on ours servers when you download all these map tiles. Alternative 3 may not be superior to the other two alternatives but may serve your purpose better if you need more than just the sea map, e.g. also weather, port infos, AIS, etc. Best, Helge Developer of the OpenSeaMap app for iOS Am 16.07.13 12:55 schrieb "Lars Thomsen" unter <lar...@st...>: > Got the same problem. Got the same problem. How can we download OpenSeaMaps to an iPad? Did you find a solution Howard? Lars Howard Allum wrotes: I am trying to use OpenSeaMap on my iPad. Please can you instruct me as to how it should be used. 1) How do you download charts to iPad? 2) Which format should I use for downloading? 3) Can I use Trip Planner on iPad? This programme looks excellent for navigation in my locality - Bay of Biscay - but I can't find any help or instructions about how to get started on my iPad on your website. I have downloaded the iPad App but it won't show me the Trip Planner tool or allow me to do anything apart from looking at the world map. Help! howard.allum@... Got the same problem. How can we download OpenSeaMaps to an iPad? Did you find a solution Howard? Lars |

Hi > I run a small daemon script that moves new tiles from a temporary cache > to the tile directory once per minute (see ~/tiler in my home > directory). Is it possible to automatically re-start this across a re-boot? In FreeBSD you have to add a line like: osmtilemover_enable="YES" to '/etc/rc.conf' and create a corresponding start script located at '/usr/local/etc/rc.d/osmtilemover' (see [1]). If you tell me the which script has to be started, I can create one for you. Best regards, Dominik [1] http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/rc-scripting/ |

Gentlemen, Just as I completed importing the data of Rio Tietê I discovered that the Brazilian Hydrographic service DHN/CHM have updated several chart folias and made two mor charts available, That means I will be busy updating as soon as I complete downloading all the new files (though I am currently experiencing problems with my download script) Aun Johnsen |

It looks like a light marking the entrance to a canal, where the navigatable waterway leaves the natural river and enters into an artifical canal. Two of them marking the left hand edge of the canal. Further up the canal on both banks are opening_to_righ, opening_to_left and keep_to_mid-river notice boards. I have temporarily tagged it as a light with triangular topmark Aun Johnsen On 22. juni 2013, at 02:45, Malcolm Herring <mal...@bt...> wrote: > On 22/06/2013 00:46, Aun Yngve Johnsen wrote: >> On a canal head in Rio Tietê there is a red light with a white triangle with red band board, how do I tag that? > > Do you know what its function is? > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > This SF.net email is sponsored by Windows: > > Build for Windows Store. > > http://p.sf.net/sfu/windows-dev2dev > _______________________________________________ > Openseamap-maps mailing list > Ope...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/openseamap-maps |
