Carlos and all
=20
I would prefer a simpler approach than PachyDRM's to FAQs
[Carlos Serrao] ok, fine by me.
=20
1)What is OpenSDRM ?
=20
Can we spell out the functionalities offered / to be offered ?
[Carlos Serrao] The functionalities for the current version are the =
ones you already know:
- Content registration;
- Content preparation and protection;
- User and component registration and authentication;
- Payment;
- License issuance and management.
=20
User Authorization
Content Registration
Billing
Content authoring/packaging ?
......
=20
=20
2) Melodeo-PatchyDRM is not free for commercial use although cheaper =
than OMA and needs registration even to read the spec=20
(any version around ?) What about OpenSDRM ?
[Carlos Serrao] The OpenSDRM license is LGPL - this means it is =
open-source and that it can be used in commercial and non-commercial =
environments. From our vision document you have:
a.. We have choose LGPL by the following reasons (I adapted this =
from the JBoss project):=20
a.. Freedom of Use: Use OpenSDRM LGPL software as a component of =
your business applications in any way you wish, including linking to =
OpenSDRM from your own or other proprietary software.=20
b.. No Royalties or License Fees: customers, partners, and the =
end-user community can make or download as many copies of OpenSDRM LGPL =
software, without payment of royalties or license fees.=20
c.. Ability to Distribute: customers, partners, and end-users may =
distribute copies of OpenSDRM LGPL software.=20
d.. Modify OpenSDRM for internal use: Anyone may make changes to =
OpenSDRM LGPL software for use within your own company. The LGPL license =
does not require you to share those internal changes with the rest of =
the community.=20
e.. Distribute modifications externally: Users may distribute =
changed versions of OpenSDRM to others, but if you distribute such =
changed versions you are required to share those changes with the rest =
of the community by publishing that changed source code under the LGPL. =
This is known as reciprocity obligation.=20
f.. Inclusion of OpenSDRM products in commercially licensed =
offerings: Unlike the GPL, the business-friendly LGPL license allows for =
OpenSDRM to be embedded in or bundled with commercially licensed OEM and =
ISV products.=20
=20
The rest of FAQs may be easier but I need feedback on the =
functionalities covered / to be covered=20
Would these functionalities be available as exposed WSDL services so =
other developers can use them in their systems ?
[Carlos Serrao] Yes, that is and has always been the philosophy of =
OpenSDRM.
=20
How these functionalities can be orchestrated/choreographed in full =
fledged services ?
[Carlos Serrao] Orchestration and choreography is something that we =
have never treated as seriously has we have should - but i think it =
should be a goal o OpenSDRM. This is something that might be achieved =
using BPEL4WS =
(http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/library/specification/ws-bpel/) =
and it needs to be developed within this OpenSDRM project.
=20
As you see we have a challenging project - even more because the DRM =
momentum is building up:
- DMP - working on the reference software (it will not be =
open-source though, at least not commercially available);
- PachyDRM - releasing to open-source, but not available =
commercially;
- Coral Consortium - releasing their specifications to =
interoperability of existing DRM platforms.
=20
Could you bring some more people to the project?
=20

Panos

Panos and all,
You seem to be a perfectly good candidate to do the Job. Are you a =
volunteer?
=20
The questions you pop are meaningful, for sure and they are =
relevant. The FAQ section of the OpenSDRM site already contains some =
information. You may take a look at:
=
http://opensdrm.adetti.pt/index.php?option=3Dcom_content&task=3Dcategory&=
sectionid=3D3&id=3D7&Itemid=3D25
=20
You may take a look also to this FAQ - this is something I think we =
should have: http://www.pachydrm.org/faq.html .
=20
You need to register at the site and I can provide you with editor =
and publisher rights.
=20
Your help is mostly welcome.
=20
Best regards,

Very interesting and useful! Have you though of any questions to be =
answered ?
=20
OpenSDRM
What is it ?
What functionality components provided ?
Does it need integration with other components to offer a service ?
What service(s) ?

Are these questions relevant ?
