There's a good discussion of some of the issues
surrounding good and bad gantt charts here:

The suggestions in the discussion section are very good.

I particularly liked the suggestion to move the task
label from the left hand side to the correct position
in the gantt chart.

I also liked the suggestion of being able to easily
create a per-person gantt chart.
