There is such a project that I have been tinkering with periodically,
called STORE. It won't be part of 1.1, sadly, but I'm maintaining a
branch with the aim to resurrect it in master once 1.1 is out. 

David showed an interest in this STORE recently. 

I'll make sure to make that branch available on github.
