you can only use the -l parameter with a local directory but you could mount the remote machines / at /somedir and then use -l /somedir.
Anyway a good idea to add support for remote system e.g. via rsync -e ssh
You might have a look at this one as well.... it is a kernel for loading kernels.... Very small but not maintained.... could be used as a jump point or basis of an idea.... http://kboot.sourceforge.net/
