  Are you willing to accept anything less if you're, say, transcoding
your VHS tapes to DVD?  Personally I'm quite happy to use 30GB/hr as a
preprocessing stage, especially with disks so cheap.

  I think it would be a mistake to do a lossy DCT approximation, or even
worse, MPEG quantization, if you can do a better job later.  And no, I'm
not talking about getting the bitrate smaller.
