Have you looked into XMLTV?

Cool.  Does that just select a single show in a single time window
(i.e. a "one-off recording) or does it allow one to say "this
time/channel/duration every week", or "this show any time is is on",
etc.  If it does any of the latter does it then perform any schedule
conflict resolution?
