I followed the pointers on this page:
and with that, I could get my Nokia working with openobex/obexftp without any problem, even on usb cable.
This means that, for USB you'll need the usb patched obex source. Right now, that's still in CVS, so let's hope it gets official soon.
For people that use Mandrake/Mandriva (and mayby also Red Hat and Suse), I compiled some rpm packages that just do as the page above describes. You can find them at: http://220.127.116.11/deel/ in the RPM/Mandrivalinux2005LE section.

Except it's not even in CVS yet. I've sent the patch to th maintainer, and he's 'mostly fine' with it, but haven't applied it yet. Write to him! :)
