Hi,

In this week I did my first video project on Linux. And besides the fact 
that there are a lot of possibilities and changes for linux video, there 
is still a long way to go imho.

I used for about 5 different apps to get something done (e.g. 
synchronize video and sound and get it on a dvd).
I had to face apps who couldn't deal with certain files formats and apps 
which contains a lot of bugs, some come abroad after 5 hours work... 
Other apps where quite difficult to use, especially the powerful but 
difficult commandline apps.

I don't have much experience with video editing on Linux. But I read a 
couple of articles about it last week and it seems that linux video is 
not as good as it should be... especially not for newbies.

I think linux audio was in the same situation some years ago. I do work 
with linux audio, so I know that situation better. They  started a 
consortium for linux audio users, developers etc. check www.linuxaudio.org

Linuxaudio.org has become a core organization in the world of linux 
audio. They have mailinglist for users to discuss how to work with the 
different linux audio apps to make music with. They have a mailinglist 
for developers to discuss how to improve linux audio and make nice linux 
audio apps. They have a linuxaudio conference each year to educate devs 
and users about linux audio apps and development.
Also the linux audio users share music with eachother here:

And they make wiki's and howto's to teach others how to work with audio 
on linux.

I think such a core organization is what the world of linux video really 
needs! If you could realize such a thing, I think linux video will 
improve a lot in the coming years, cause although I had a difficult 
week, I still believe in the possibilities of the linux video apps!

I will send this email to the lists of Cinelerra, kdenlive, 
openmovieeditor and kino. I'll also post a message in some IRC 
chatchannels...

Don't get me wrong, I will not be the one who will build such a 
organization. I'm not a video artist or user that much... It's just my 
vision about how to improve linux video and a serious suggestion for you 
linux video lovers....

successful to create and edit my movie, fantastic it works, open a .avi 
file and open a mp3 sound ..
after done
i do the follow up

BUT where can i store my edit movie of where can i find it back?? on my 
hard-disk to upload on youtube??, the program is not asking where i want 
to store my new project movie, can you tell me where to find or do it.

Does this software have to be run via a Graphical Interface like GNU or KDE?  or Can I run this via a Command Line Interface server like UBUNTU?

Hi,

No, I get an error telling me that OME does not support audio 
samplerates other than 48000 and 44100. I tried some other video and 
audio files, OME would not take any of them either. Have to find another 
editor.

Hi,

when you drag the file into an audio-track, can you see some kind of
"wave-form"? Do you get Audio Output from OME when inserting some
soundfile in a different format?

Hi, this could also be a bug in the program, does the sound work on
playback? What (audio)format are your original files in? Could you mail
me a small sample privately? (richard.spindler AT gmail.com)

And can you state the exact version of OME that you are using? When you
start openmovieeditor from a console, you should see some messages about
versions and stuff, maybe you can mail that info.

hiya`
okay so i'm still so lost. i have this video i've been working on, i
followed the instructions form my last question, on which codecs to
use (used ffmpge + twos audio, also tried jpegmovie +twos audio) yet i
can only get video....my audio is garbled (clean source on the
original files)

i was wondering, could i have emailed perscisley what codec settings
to use (ultimatly i want this on dvd) and what file extension to use
(it doesn't auto fill :S) thanks!

Hi,

Open Movie Editor cannot directly export to DVD format, you would need
to encode to an intermediate file, using for example the jpeg video
codec in high quality, and the twos uncompressed Audio codec, and then
use ffmpeg and dvdauthor to create the DVD.

Hi,

installing Open Movie Editor from source is a little difficult, so the
recommended way to install it, is to use the packages available from the
distribution. OME however is a very young project, so it is not
available from a lot of distributions. :-( And those distributions that
have it, have often very out of date versions.

If you want to, you can give it a try however. First read the following
instructions:

They are NOT specific for Open Movie Editor, they just explain the
general way of installing software from source-code in Linux.

After that you can look at the following guide:

It is not a step by step instruction, but it mentions all the main tasks
that need to be done, and maybe it can help you a little.

Currently the best supported Distribution for using Open Movie Editor is
OpenSuSE, with the packman repositories, it has always the newest binary
packages for OME, they are the most easy to install, but you need to use
the OpenSuSE distribution.

I am using Puppy ver 4.0 which comes with a package manager with which it downloads / unzips / installs new programs... but having not found OME on this list and downloaded the OME installer i now do not know what to do... can anyone give me a tutorial of some kind and/or a step-by-step?
