Are you saying that "git push" does not copy my file to the GitHub server?

The alternative AFAICT would be to put a reference (of some kind) to the
source file on my computer there, so that when someone else wants to look at
it, it gets uploaded from me and downloaded to them.  Is that what happens?
(I find the idea rather frightening.)
