In my usual tradition of trying to do more stuff than I have time for, I'm now poking at a python script that does Blender->MDL exportation (http://www.beastwithin.org/users/wwwwolf/games/nwn/neverblender.html).
Seeing as how my knowledge of Blender is comparable to my knowledge of social graces (that is to say, none at all), if anyone proficient with Blender and/or Python needs something somewhat interesting to do and can lend a hand trying to get something to import MDL hacked together (and perhaps improvements to the existing script), I'd be pleased as a peach.
I'm trying to learn blender myself, but as I'm not an artist to begin with, I feel my time might be better spent on other things that need done...

Wow! Nicely done! I found it really weird that Bioware's pages suggest that 3dsMax is the only possible modeler to use. Now we can say for sure that it's not, right?
OTOH, my excitement dimmed when I saw Blender's UI - ugh, I think they need to go to ease-of-use school again... :-)

Actually, I think I should recant that initial reaction, which was probably more akin to a caveman looking at the cockpit of a 747 than anything else. This Blender thing is pretty awesome! Some bugs to work out under OS X, but its capabilities seem incredible!
