In the freebsd build from ports of OpenSP 1.5.2, using the -v switch from the commandline with onsgmls seems to cause a hand. Version number is reported but onsgmls stays open and appears to try to parse anything entered at STDIN. Ctrl-D produces the end of document in prolog message, and of course it can be killed with Ctrl-C.
You may have your reasons for doing it this way, but it seems to me the expected behavior would be report version no. and exit.
Thanks. email@example.com PS: (it appears SP does the same thing.)
