[Openisp-developer] Cleaning up webpage and trying to figure out how to...+NukeSpam

Cleaning up the webpage (thanks Seba) and trying to figure out how to get
our CVS tree on to Sourceforge.

Lots of delays and work related problems, but hey work continues on this
monster sized application.

The new NukeSpam.cgi and tAccess stuff in the Mail admin area is looking
pretty good and has been found very useful.

This month with 2 more installs done, we now have more than 6 medium to
small ISP's using the ism|2 with some ism|3 modules in place.

[Openisp-developer] MySQL scrapped in favor of PostgreSQL

OpenISP Friends:

Due to concerns of several ISP's about the need for Oracle (reg. tm) like
features...We have decided to go with PostgreSQL instead of MySQL.

We realize that MySQL is "getting there" but we need transactions and
rollback NOW. We also would like to support PostgreSQL's fight as the open
source replacement for the evil, but powerful Oracle database.

Things have been very busy at work, so the OpenISP release is still behind
schedule. Sebastian will work on the site home page
and post screen shots of all the ism|2 does. I hope this will attract more
developers as people see that the OpenISP ism|2 is a working (and very
powerful multifaceted) ISP management system.

Hi! OpenISP developers and contributors:

I`m working in my spare time on the first release and it should be ready in the next month.( I am also
organizing and cleaning up dirty code segments and sections worthy of inclusion in a "bad programming practices" article --If my old UCLA TA saw some of the code, he would freak!)

More importantly, I had to address several current ISP user concerns about security and some minor
legal/commercial issues.

These can be best summarized in a question/answer format:

1-. If you release the code could hackers look through the source for cgi security errors and access our ISP system?

Yes maybe...so I checked and found several problem areas. I used the IBM site 

http://www-4.ibm.com/software/developer/library/secure-cgi/

as a reference on what to look for. I found several problems! These are being fixed.


2-. I paid you for the ISM system and still am paying you for support, and now you are going to give it away?
What will my virtual ISP clients say when they discover they can get the free OpenISP software that I charge them for?

This is a major headache, but I`m working out the details so we can go open source without destroying past
relationships that have made the OpenISP project possible.

Cool new ism|2 stuff being done for a couple of ISP`s: Unlimited number of mail servers for 24x7 website customer up-selling of webfarm based pop3 and imap accounts. Also unlimited radius server support for virtual
ISP`s with their own virtual radius servers.

Also: Dropping MSIE support of ismanager.cgi/ismserver.cgi/vip.cgi/webmail.cgi, until I get more help.

The only problem is that it totally depends on msql which is not GPL'd. But is OPEN and free as in free beer
under certain conditions. I quote the manual:

"Although the mSQL software distribution is made available over the Internet (and other mechanisms) it is not
public domain software or FreeWare. mSQL is a commercial, supported software package developed by
Hughes Technologies Pty Ltd in Australia. Use of this software in any commercial environment requires the
purchase of a commercial use license from Hughes Technologies. Free licenses are provided to organisations
such as Universities, schools and registered charities in an attempt to maintain the ethos of the original
Internet. For more information on purchasing a license or determining whether you qualify for a free license,
please see the Hughes Technologies World Wide Web site at http://Hughes.com.au/."

I'm not sure if sourceforge open source ettiquette allows even the accounting.cgi source to be released. Since
it would be promoting the use of msql.

If it is ok to do so, then as Lewis suggests we should do this ASAP. Along with all the OpenISP suite.

Another approach to get the DBI (generalized database interface) happening would be to release -more widely
needed- stand alone OpenISP parts like the webmail.cgi.

There is a definite need for fast C webmail interfaces that work directly off of unix mail files -like pine. But that
have all the searchability and configurability of a database model -EmuMail-

(By the way I wrote the webmail app because EmuMail sucks unless you have very high speed low traffic
servers -then it just works ok...Plus their encrypting the perl is totally against open source ethos.)

It follows that If someone would write the DBI for the webmail then I could port the ismanager and ismserver apps
and we could release a .tgz quickly.

Can all the source be released yet or is there some issue there. I have
reffered a couple of people to the site and becaudse there is no source code
there they are kind of balking at the openess. I understand there may be issues
but at the same time I think more developers will come to heklp fix it if it is
available to be worked on. What do ya'll think?
