It's doing a fair amount of work at initialization, particularly if you're initializating a lot of classes, but I don't think it's doing *that* much work as compared with I/O-bound processes like accesing your database. So how many classes are you initializing? Are there lots of custom rules or behaviors? To be honest speed, particularly initialization speed, hasn't been a real big priority to this point -- most of the people using SPOPS do so in a persistent environment, so initialization isn't a big deal.
