At some point you just need a faster CPU.  Seriously, what time are you
getting when you run the example "Remove Backspace.vi"?  On my machine
this takes about 1000 ms.  You should scale your results against those
that are posted.  And, you can always submit your entry (more than one
submission is allowed) and see how fast it runs on the "judging machine".
