Hi folks, I recently finished my Ph.D. and started a new job at a small startup company. The OpenGC version control server will probably be migrating to our company server in the near future; please bear with me during the changeover. I obviously haven't done much work on OpenGC in the past 18 months or so - those of you who have ever experienced the endgame of a PhD will understand why. But enough excuses... the good news is that I'm teaching a C++ programming course for engineers this fall and OpenGC will likely play a part. I look forward to this being a resumption of active OpenGC development. I'll let you know once the server changeover is complete. Cheers, Damion |

Hi all, Our lab CVS server (which OpenGC is hosted on) went down several weeks ago and is still being repaired. I am moving OpenGC to a more modern machine that uses SVN rather than CVS. I will post as soon as this changeover is complete. Thanks in advance for you patience. -Damion- |

I'm interested in doing a multi-panel simulation of a radio system. The mai= n=20 purpose is for training in the page transitions. I'm having a look at OpenG= C=20 for this (along with a340, and perhaps a custom Qt design). I can't make the Keypad example work properly. It comes up OK, but pressing= on=20 the buttons doesn't appear to change the KeypadDisplay - the messages aren'= t=20 received and the display is all zeros. Can anyone duplicate this? Any suggestions. Brad |

Hi, The license is more or less a BSD style license, meaning that you can=20 do whatever you want with the code (modify it or not, release your=20 changes or not, sell it or not, etc.) as long as you acknowledge the=20 original copyright in whatever source or binary you redistribute. The=20 fact that the copyright is in my name is simply a convenience for=20 allowing me to move the source code around - you are free to do most=20 anything you want with it. You can access the source code through the OpenGC CVS server. A=20 description of how to do this can be found on the website: http://www.opengc.org/developers_cvs.html Let me know if you have any additional questions. Hi to whom may concern
After downloading Opengc-0.56 (Glass Cockpit)... I have read the manual
in PDF and understand regarding to copyright by Damion Shelton. Now a bit
concerned.. This distributed software may have omission and I would like to
provide some extra assistance regarding to this software. But I don't really know
how or is not much familiar with this kind of requirements. My
understanding, opengc may be distribute for anyone to use this software for free, but is
there any possible or anyhow I could get source codes or may want to do some
additional or modification regarding to this program? If so, what do I need to
do? who should I contact with for the source code? Where do I find them? any
suggestion you would provide I would be happy to find out such information
on this particular software's souce code or some kind of license.
Let me know

Thanks Damion, I'm just starting to delve into OpenGL and hope it will do what I want. I don't have any programming experience with OpenGL yet so it will be a while but should be interesting to learn. Sounds like I need to look at Direct 3D as well. Are there any tutorials for programming for flight sims on the net? Thanks again for your help. Jim |

Hi, You are certainly welcome to base your instruments on the OpenGC code,=20= but it requires that you use C++ and OpenGL. If you're writing from=20 scratch, I'd still suggest OpenGL, though integrating Direct3D with=20 Visual Basic may be a bit easier. If you're connected to Microsoft FS=20 using FSUPIC/WideFS there is some demo code available in the FSUIPC=20 developers toolkit for Visual Basic. Hi, > In the Navigation directory, the NavDatabase::InitDatabase loads > nav.dat and apt.dat. There seems to be some files related to > fixes (ogcFixGeographicObject.cpp), but they don't seem to be > written. Are these works in progress? Yes, they're works in progress. Basically, I wrote a simple parser that reads in the X-Plane format nav database stuff and one of the X-Plane nav files was "fix.dat". I ran into a few problems that halted nav database development: 1) The X-Plane database contains kludges to make the data work well in X-Plane's somewhat odd world representation. This makes me skeptical that the data could be relied on for real-world navigation. 2) I was using a Mercator map project, which is substantially less than ideal. I'm developing a lambert conformal conic projection with the idea that I can also load in the rasterized sectional charts in geotiff format from the FAA, but this is still vaporware at this point. 3) The entire nav project got put on hold because of the data source rewrite, which I just finished (using the term finished loosely) a week ago. > Shouldn't the fixes be > similar to the navaids and airports? Or are there just too many > of them defined? What is the status of these files? There's no fundamental limit to the amount of navigation data OpenGC can hold. The data itself is relatively compact, the main challenge is hashing the data in a reasonable way so that only the local area needs to be rendered. I was chunking the data into 1x1 degree bins, which worked reasonably well but could no doubt be improved quite a bit. To answer your first question, yes, the fixes would be quite similar to airports and navaids. They're actually about as simple as you can get: a lat/lon coordinate pair and a text identifier. After I finish updating all of the data source code the nav subsystem is the next "big thing" I'm going to tackle. If you have any feedback / suggestions / comments I'd appreciate hearing them. Hi folks, A quick note that the "opengcnew" repository has been renamed to "opengc", with the primary module of "opengc". What I was terming opengcnew is finally mature enough to resume the title of the main opengc development tree. I'll make the contents of the old repository available via FTP off of the sourceforge site if anyone has a reason to want access to it. Anonymous login and everything else is the same, only the repository and module names have changed. Incidentally, the opengc repository contains what I've done so far with rewriting the data source code. Let me know what you think. Not everything is functional yet, though what's there has been tested on both Windows and Mac and builds ok. Cheers, Damion |

Hi, I have two gauges a SkyGauge and a modified 777PFD gauge. Setting up the ini file with just one gauge at time gives me the following rendering times. 777PFD 30ms per frame SkyGauge <1 ms per frame However when I enter both gauges in the ini file i.e. NEWGAUGE SkyGauge 10 10 0.75 0.75 ENDGAUGE NEWGAUGE Boeing777PFD 35 10 0.5 0.5 ENDGAUGE The render time for the 777PFD gauge jumps to over 170ms per frame. Any ideas ? regards Steve Doyle |

Hi Damion,
Let give you a little background on this.
I am currently trying to display the guages on top of a live video display.
I have done this by creating a new guage component that consists of an
openGL texture which I am rendering the live video to using
DSVideoLib(Allows the use of Microsoft's Direct Show with openGL). It was
while I was doing this that I noticed my performance problem.
I have subsequently removed this component and started doing performance
tests on OpenGC unmodified.
I am running standalone, well I have set the datasource to be EGyro, but
nothing is physically connected to the comm port.
I have selected the 777 pfd minus the altitude tape and the speed tape.
I have set the app rate as you suggested, but this has made no difference
i.e appUpdateRate = 1.0 / 1000.0;
My method of timming the app is primitive, I put the following code in the
draw method of ogcFLTKRenderWindow
unsigned int dwStart=GetTickCount();
this->Render();
unsigned int dwTime=GetTickCount()-dwStart;
printf("Time(ms) = %d\n",dwTime);
On 1.9GhZ P4 with 1GB RAM and an ATI RAGE 128PRO video card
I get an average of 25fps.
I have also tried it on a 2.2GHz P4, 1GB RAM and Nvidia Geforce 4 with very
similar results.
I've also tried it in both release & debug modes again there is no
difference. I get the feeling this is going to turn out to be something very
silly, but I can't think what.
Cheers
Steve

Hi,
One question comes to mind immediately.... you mentioned that you
"altered the app update rate appropriately". Was that modification of
this line:
appUpdateRate = 1.0 / 24.0;
in main.cpp?
If you set this to be 1/1000 what happens? Also, you mention removing a
piece of debug code - could you be more specific? Is this a debug or
release build?
Thanks,
-Damion-

A few additional thoughts: I just ran a frame rate test on my Mac laptop (1Ghz G4) and I'm seeing about 60-70 FPS in stand alone mode. Is the frame rate you're reporting in a test "stand-alone" mode (i.e. without being connected to a data source) or while connected to a sim? This is probably obvious, but all sim connections are limited by the server side frame rate. Regardless of how fast the client (OpenGC) is trying to render data, it only visually updates the gauges at the frame rate provided by the sim. Unfortunately the initial frame rate test function does not work on Windows, and I'm not sure why; this is the easiest way to verify that you're getting adequate performance, since it runs through 200 rendering frames by applying sin and cos functions to a few of the data source parameters. This test completes in approximately 3 seconds on my laptop, and I'd be extremely surprised if a modern Windows or Linux machine was slower. One final note: the font rendering in OpenGC is surprisingly graphics intensive. Gauges which use a large number of fonts (the nav gauge is currently by far the worst offender) are slower than you'd probably expect. Font rendering could be greatly accelerated by caching bitmaps of each font rather than using vector rendering, but that would be at the expense of scale independence. Hi, One question comes to mind immediately.... you mentioned that you "altered the app update rate appropriately". Was that modification of this line: appUpdateRate = 1.0 / 24.0; in main.cpp? If you set this to be 1/1000 what happens? Also, you mention removing a piece of debug code - could you be more specific? Is this a debug or release build? Hi, I've made a slight improvement(removed a piece of debug code which I had in), I've got it up to 25fps, but that's still very low. Some of the standard GL benchtests which are displaying far more complex objects are achieving 100s fps on my system. (Can't find any reference to glEnable(GL_LINE_STIPPLE) in the base code) I have tried it on an ATI RAGE 128 PRO & and on an Nvidia GeForce 4. What kind of framerate is everyone else getting ? Cheers Steve -----Original Message----- From: Dieter Polzin [mailto:dp...@ab...] Sent: 30 April 2004 12:49 To: ope...@li... Subject: Re: [Opengc-devel] Performance Issue( help!) Hi, What gfx card are you using? I've experienced problems on a card using line stippling, ie enabling line stippling with glEnable(GL_LINE_STIPPLE) caused the performance of the card to break.
