If you want to build a world-class simulator you need access to the OS internals and the ability to control hardware other than through the application layer. And peek and poke just don't cut it. But from what I've seen, the market is for hardware and interfaces to work with and in the windows environment so one either goes with the flow, sets their own course, or does without.
