Peter had an idea about how to choose which tiles to include/exclude and
asked me to articulate it.
We use gluPerspective which I believe (I could be wrong on this) does some
calculations then calls glFrustum with a top, bottom, left, right, near
and far clipping planes. These clipping planes define a volume which we
know the dimensions for. Could we not then just check if a tile falls
within this volume and include for rendering based on that? The problem
is then how to get the top, bottom, left, right clipping planes. If my
original assumption is correct, the gluPerspective does some calculation
to get these which we could duplice ourselves and then call glFrustum
