OpenEV uses NetPBM with portable bitmap files.
While NetPBM supports 16-bits per channel, OpenEV
currently uses only 8-bits. This is most noticeable in
grayscale where DEM elevations are reduced to 255.
Use of 16-bit grayscales would, in the case of the DEM,
preserve the integrity of the data as well as improve
the accuracy and overall appaearance of the DEM.
Incidentally, the PNG and TIFF formats also support
16-bit grayscales. Since a large number of maps
eventually make it to pre-press and production,
Adding 16-bit depth for these formats would result in
a map both accurate and visually more pleasing.
